Minister of Internal Affairs, Andrew Napuat, has issued a strong appeal to all Members of Parliament (MPs), urging them to swiftly finalise their political affiliations as the grace period deadline looms.
The grace period, which has been in effect since June 12, 2024, is set to conclude on September 12, 2024.
This deadline is crucial for MPs to ensure their compliance with the newly amended constitutional provisions, specifically 17A and 17B.
Minister Napuat emphasised the importance of adhering to the deadline, saying that the time remaining is rapidly dwindling.
He acknowledged that some political parties are actively working to align their internal structures and constitutions with the new constitutional requirements.
However, he stressed that this work must be completed promptly to avoid any potential repercussions.
However, he said that with the grace period coming to an end on September 12, it is imperative that this work is done without delay.
The amended provisions, 17A and 17B, have introduced noteworthy changes that require all political parties to adjust their constitutions accordingly.
These amendments are aimed at fostering greater stability within the political landscape by ensuring that party structures are robust and compliant with the law.
Minister Napuat’s appeal is particularly directed at the presidents and executives of political parties. He urged them to take their responsibilities seriously and to act swiftly in making the necessary adjustments to their constitutions.
The amendments to the constitution, which have already taken effect, require political parties to align their internal rules with the national legal framework.
Failure to do so within the given timeframe could result in severe consequences for both the parties and their affiliated MPs.
