The press conference held at the Chiefs Nakamal by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Andrew Napuat yesterday had a very good turnout.
The conference had an audience from the media, Leader of Opposition Ishmael Kalsakau, members of the Vanuatu Police Force, civilians and it was also livestreamed.
The Minister responsible for Security said after cynical comments made on FB against him and alleged corruption within his Ministry and the VPF, he saw the need to clarify all allegations at the Chiefs Nakamal.
“As the President of Malvatumauri right fully said, this place (nakamal) sees no winner or loser in a situation such as this but a chance to put everything out in the light all differences aside and work together towards a common interest,” he said.
“We are here to set light on issues surrounding the VPF and get constructive comments and critics on how we can better deal with them, but not through false accusations and cursing on social media.”
Mr Napuat said the new trend of attacking people, especially leaders on social media has started to instill an attitude of disrespect in today’s generation.
“We have institutions and mechanisms in place where you can lodge a complaint for investigation on me or any leader you suspect of corruption and political interference on policies set out by the government but not through social media and fake IDs,” he said.
The press conference featured the Minister going through the vision, the mission of the ministry and clarification of his intentions on the proposed amendment policy of CAP 105.
“The Act has clearly stated that a Minister responsible can come up with a policy direction and with the recent saga of alleged family business in the Police recruitment all over the media, we are trying to find out mechanisms to enable a transparent recruitment and in line with the Government’s Decentralization Policy,” he said.
During the Q&A part of the conference, the Leader of Opposition called on the Minister to review the amended policy and make necessary changes with close consultation with VPF.
MP Kalsakau also acknowledged the Minister for the changes already taking place.
“With your energy as the Minister responsible, channel the initiatives in an objective way, help the VPF run their show whilst you provide guidelines,” he said.
Mr Napuat said that as the theme of the ministry ‘A Government within people’s reach’, he has taken note on all questions, comments and critics made during the conference and will work on it before presenting the proposed amended policy to the Council of Ministers.
